one of the oldest known medicinal plants. It
is mentioned in Holy Vedas, Ramayana, Bible,
Quran, and Ancient. Egyptian and Chinese
History, Cleopatra queen of Egypt used
Aloevera for preservation of her beauty.
Alexander the Great fought a battle for
soccotra island, where Aloevera grows, in
333 BC for his wounded soldiers, Mahatma
Gandhi described the nutritional value of
Aloevera during his long fasting in 19th
Century.
Aloevera is a semitropical plant. There
are around 300 species but only three have
medicinal value. These three are:
1. Aloevera Barbadensis
2. Aloevera Ferox
3. Aloevera Pari baker
The
most potent is “Aloevera Barbadensis” its
belong to Liliaceae family. According to
different languages its manes are as below:
Hindi
- Gwarpatha, Kumari , Ghee Kanwar
English - Aloevera
Botanical - Aloevera Barbadensis
Name
based on properties- Sanjivini Buti, Magic
wand , Miracle Plant & Plant of life.
PLANT DESCRIPTION
It is
a coarse perennial plant with short stem and
shallow root system. Leaves are fleshy, in
roseltes, densely crowded with horny pickles
on the margins,. Surface of the leaf is pale
green with irregular white linings or
pouches and flowers are brought fellow in
colour. It flowers during Sept.- December.
Aloevera leaves are used for medicinal
purpose. The juice of Aloevera leaver is
used as medicine and its called Aloevera
Gel.
COMPONENTS OF ALOEVERA
Aloevera contains at least 75
known ingredients which can divided into the
following groups:
-
VITAMINS: It is rich in
all vitamins specially the anti-oxidant
vitamin A, C & E, other are B1, B2, B6,
B12, folic acid and choline. Vitamins in
natural form are very fast absorbable
and useful in compression of synthetics.
-
MINERALS: Calcium,
Potassium, Iron, Sodium, Magnesium,
Maganese, Copper, Chromium and
anti-oxidant Selenium. Although minerals
and trace elements are only needed in
very small quantity, they are essential
for the proper functioning of various
enzyme systems in different metabolic
pathways.
-
ENZYMES: These are
bio-chemicals, which catalyze the
digestion and other metabolic reactions
in the body. Aloevera contains
phosphates, amylase, lipase, catalyze,
creative, phosphokin, nuclestides,
cellulose, alkaline phosphates
proteolysis and Bradykinase.
Especially Bradykinase,
helps to reduce excessive inflammation
when applied to the skin topically and
therefore reduce pain and any other
abnormal sensation. Others helps in
digest any dead tissues in wounds.
Lipase and protease which break down
foods and aid digestion are present.
-
SUGAR: These are derived
from the mucilage layer of the plant
which surrounds the inner gel and are
known as mucopolysaccharides, which
enhance the immune system and help to
detoxify. Aloevera contains bath mono &
polysaccharides, but the most important
are the long chain sugars involving
glucose and mannose. These sugars are
ingested whole from the gut, not broken
down like other sugars, and appear in
the bloodstream in exactly the same
form. This process in known as
pinocytosis. Some of these
polysaccharides are not absorbed but
stick to certain cells lining the gut
and from a barriers preventing
absorption of unwanted material so
helping to prevent a ‘leaking’ gut
syndrome in topical preparation. The
sugars are main moisturizers.
-
LAXETIVES (Anthraquinones):
There are twelve of these phenolic
compounds which are found exclusively in
the plant. The important one, Aloin &
Emodin, act as laxative, painkillers,
antibacterial and antiviral.
-
LIGNINS: It is an inert
substance but when included in topical
preparations it help to penetrate
ingredients into the skin.
-
SAPOONINS: These soapy
substances form about 3% of the Aloevera
Gel and are capable of cleansing &
having antiseptic properties. These act
powerfully as antimicrobials against
bacteria, viruses, fungus and yeast.
-
FATTY ACIDS: In Aloevera
four steroids are present i.e.
cholesterol, campestrol, B sisosterol
and lupeol. These four plant steroids
are important anti-inflammatory agents.
-
SALICYLIC ACID: It is an
aspirin like compound possessing
anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial
properties.
-
AMINO ACIDS: Aloevera
contains 20 Amino Acids, out of 20, 7
are essential amino acids which our body
cannot synthesis. These are Isoleucine,
Leucine, Lysine, methionine, valenin,
phenylalanine and thereonine.
USAGE & IMPORTANCE
A
Unique plant with multi purpose and multi
nutritional qualities, possessing multiple
action and helps to prevent diseases,
maintains and restore health and promotes
healing. It contains Vitamins, Enzymes,
Minerals Laxatives (Anthraquinones)
Lignin’s, Saponins, Fatty, acids, salicylic
Acid, amino acids, proteins and sugars.
It
provides a rich cocktail of nutritional
elements whose combines action and balance
produce a more powerful effect together,
that would be expected from the addition on
the individual components. This is because
they work as a team, enhancing each other’s
effects known as synergism.
It
also has “adaptogenic” properties, which
means that different individuals take from
it what they need. Therefore the benefits
vary from person to person.
Aloevera because of its nutritional
qualities and antioxidant properties helps
to prevent injury to the epithelial tissues
and when they are damaged, it promotes
healing. The antioxidant fight the “ Free
Radicals” the unstable compounds produced by
our metabolism and found in the
environmental pollutants. They are thought
to cause the aging and diseases Aloevera
will clean all the capillaries and other
tubular mechanisms in the whole body and do
the Repair , Rejuvenation and Regeneration
of cells, the basic unit of life
Detoxification = Elimination + Regeneration
+ Assimilation.

absorbed through special receptor sites,
which exist within the human digestive
tract.

Increases phagocytosis dramatically to
ingest foreign vital and bacterial
agents.

not digested by enzyme systems, it is
taken up into the cell intact.
-
Increases circulation through out the
body and aids in blood sugar balancing.
-
Is
an extremely effective intracellular
anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger.

Uses of
Aloe Vera in Skin Care
The most
important benefits of aloe Vera are;
-
Due
to its high water contents aloe Vera is
an excellent moisturizer and it is used
to treat dry cracked skin.

A
regular use of aloe extract or fresh
lump helps to improve skin’s nutrition,
restores its moisture and restores
natural beauty. Nowadays aloe plant is
also used in antipigmentary creams to
lighten any dark spots giving you skin
clear.
Aloe vera extracts have
antibacterial and antifungal activities. For
example, Aloe extracts have been shown to
inhibit the growth of fungi that cause tinea,[60]
however, evidence for control beneath human
skin remains to be established. For
bacteria, inner-leaf gel from Aloe Vera was
shown to inhibit growth of Streptococcus and
Shigella species in vitro. It is due to
these medicinal properties that Aloe Vera is
still used widely in many herbal and
alternative medicines.
